I’m the last generation of kids in the US who grew up without a cellphone glued to their hands. Playing meant heading into the forest, even if it was in a downpour, to make potions out of moss and smashed flowers with my best friend.
In high school, our AP environmental science teacher had pretty alarming news for us. Climate change was heading in a dark direction for thousands of species, and we were to blame. Additionally, he showed us how oil companies paid off scientists to skew the data and to publish false reports in attempt to hide how monumentally devastating climate change would be for this planet if we were to continue our current trajectory.
I struggled to teach climate change every year when I was a teacher; knowing that we’ve entered the Earth’s 6th mass extinction event in its history. I never wanted students to lose hope, so we concluded the unit with a summit about developing ways scientists were navigating our increasing global temperature. Some of my students saw hope and became excited about the new technology being developed to adapt to extreme weather patterns and the loss of biodiversity. Others took part in making immediate change. Sometimes, students took the news harder than I anticipated; They lost hope, saying should give up as a species if the data is this bad. We know the result of what will happen if we give up. Our species will destroy itself along with the rest of Earth’s biodiversity. Why not believe and work towards a future with a much different ending? A better one.
I do have hope for our future. But so much needs to change. Now we’re trading our fresh water to feed the advancement of Artificial Intelligence. Corporations have clearly shown us that lives are not the priority; profit is.
For this reason, we still have to keep talking about it. I can’t let corporations win. This is also why I want to go back to my roots and create art that represents why I started Quantum Jungle in 2020. To give a voice to endangered species and to keep a dialogue open about how capitalism is accelerating their extinction and in turn, our own.
